Edge AI: Starts with Why
The electronics industry, which has been pushing IoT for 25 years, has changed its tune. Now, the industry is trumpeting the dawn of “Edge AI” and claiming that it’s going to change everything.
It’s nice to have aspirations.
But, to me, this switcheroo inspires skepticism.
John Weil, vice president and general manager of IoT and Edge AI processor business at Synaptics, clears the air with an honest assessment of IoT.
“Frankly,” he says, “most consumers didn’t understand why they needed IoT.”
In this first episode of Synaptics’ three-part Edge AI series, Weil examines why the first wave of IoT fell short of expectations. He discusses aspects of Edge AI and how they are being implemented on various devices.
Most important is his exploration of Edge AI’s potential. He explains what the industry must do to make Edge AI viable as a technology, and useful to consumers.
Our video conversation takes you through:
• Why the first wave of IoT faltered
• How AI at the Edge attacks that issue
• Context-aware devices and why we need them
• Synaptics & Google, and the importance of hyperscaler collaboration and open source
